The Red List of Plants in Bangladesh is a comprehensive inventory of the country’s plant species categorized based on their level of threat. The Bangladesh National Herbarium (BNH) and the IUCN Bangladesh are jointly working on the implementation of the Teknaf Hill and Forest (SUFAL) project, which is currently under implementation by the Forest Department. The sub-project titled “Developing Bangladesh National Red List of Plants and Developing Management Strategy of Invasive Alien Species of Plants in Selected Protected Areas” aims to verify a total of 1,000 plant species on the red list and develop management plans for foreign invasive plants (IAS).

During August-December 2021, a third workshop was organized by the IUCN Bangladesh in collaboration with plant experts, Forest Department, and Bangladesh National Herbarium to prepare and evaluate the Red List of Trees using IUCN guidelines. Subsequently, with the participation of relevant experts, the real status of 218 plant species in Bangladesh was presented in the Red List through 16 review workshops facilitated by the IUCN.

Within it, 2 species are extinct, 28 species are endangered, 65 species are vulnerable, 12 species are at near threatened, and 59 species are under least concern. All relevant parties are united in their support of conservation efforts for these 50 data-deficient species. In addition, a total of 16 plant species are identified as Invasive Alien Species (AIS) in 5 protected areas. The IUCN categories include 7 species of major consern, 3 species of moderate, 5 species of minor, and 1 species of minimal concern.

The Red List of Plants in Bangladesh has been serving as a valuable tool for conservation planning and biodiversity management in the country. It has been helping in raising awareness about the importance of plant diversity and the need to protect threatened plant species. Through the implementation of conservation measures, such as habitat restoration and protected area management, it has been possible to prevent the extinction of many plant species and ensure the long-term survival of Bangladesh’s rich plant diversity.
