Three\u00a0<a title=\"Subspecies\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Subspecies\">subspecies<\/a>\u00a0are recognised\u2014<i><a title=\"Sri Lankan elephant\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sri_Lankan_elephant\">E. m. maximus<\/a><\/i>\u00a0from\u00a0<a title=\"Sri Lanka\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sri_Lanka\">Sri Lanka<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Indian elephant\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indian_elephant\"><i>E. m. indicus<\/i><\/a>\u00a0from mainland Asia and\u00a0<i><a title=\"Sumatran elephant\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sumatran_elephant\">E. m. sumatranus<\/a><\/i>\u00a0from the island of\u00a0<a title=\"Sumatra\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sumatra\">Sumatra<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-MSW_1-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asian_elephant#cite_note-MSW-1\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0It is one of only three living species of\u00a0<a title=\"Elephant\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elephant\">elephants<\/a>\u00a0or\u00a0<a title=\"Elephantidae\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elephantidae\">elephantids<\/a>\u00a0anywhere in the world, the others being the\u00a0<a title=\"African bush elephant\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/African_bush_elephant\">African bush elephant<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"African forest elephant\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/African_forest_elephant\">African forest elephant<\/a>.<\/p><p>The Asian elephant is the largest living land animal in\u00a0<a title=\"Asia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asia\">Asia<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Shoshani82_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Since 1986, the Asian elephant has been listed as\u00a0<a title=\"Endangered species\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Endangered_species\">Endangered<\/a>\u00a0on the\u00a0<a title=\"IUCN Red List\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/IUCN_Red_List\">IUCN Red List<\/a>, as the population has declined by at least 50 percent over the last three elephant generations, which is about 60\u201375 years. It is primarily threatened by\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Loss of habitat\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Loss_of_habitat\">loss of habitat<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Habitat degradation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Habitat_degradation\">habitat degradation<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Habitat fragmentation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Habitat_fragmentation\">fragmentation<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Poaching\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Poaching\">poaching<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-iucn_3-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asian_elephant#cite_note-iucn-3\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0In 2019, the wild population was estimated at 48,323-51,680 individuals.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Menon_2019_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0Female captive elephants have lived beyond 60 years when kept in semi-natural surroundings, such as forest camps. In zoos, Asian elephants die at a much younger age; captive populations are declining due to a low birth and high death rate.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Sukumar2003_6-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p><p>The genus\u00a0<i>Elephas<\/i>\u00a0originated in\u00a0<a title=\"Sub-Saharan Africa\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sub-Saharan_Africa\">Sub-Saharan Africa<\/a>\u00a0during the\u00a0<a title=\"Pliocene\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pliocene\">Pliocene<\/a>\u00a0and spread throughout Africa before expanding into the southern half of Asia.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Haynes1993_2-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>The earliest indications of captive use of Asian elephants are engravings on seals of the\u00a0<a title=\"Indus Valley Civilisation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indus_Valley_Civilisation\">Indus Valley Civilisation<\/a>\u00a0dated to the 3rd millennium BC.<sup id=\"cite_ref-sukumar93_7-0\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scientific_name\">scientific name<\/a>\u00a0<i>Elephas maximus<\/i>\u00a0in 1758 for an elephant from\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Ceylon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ceylon\">Ceylon<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><i>Elephas indicus<\/i>\u00a0was proposed by\u00a0<a title=\"Georges Cuvier\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Georges_Cuvier\">Georges Cuvier<\/a> in 1798, who described an elephant from India.\u00a0<a title=\"Coenraad Jacob Temminck\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coenraad_Jacob_Temminck\">Coenraad Jacob Temminck<\/a>\u00a0named an elephant from Sumatra\u00a0<i>Elephas sumatranus<\/i>\u00a0in 1847.<sup id=\"cite_ref-10\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><a title=\"Frederick Nutter Chasen\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frederick_Nutter_Chasen\">Frederick Nutter Chasen<\/a>\u00a0classified all three as\u00a0<a title=\"Subspecies\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Subspecies\">subspecies<\/a>\u00a0of the Asian elephant in 1940.<sup id=\"cite_ref-11\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0These three subspecies are currently recognised as\u00a0<a title=\"Valid name (zoology)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Valid_name_(zoology)\">valid<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Taxon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taxon\">taxa<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Shoshani82_4-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-iucn_3-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Results of\u00a0<a title=\"Phylogeography\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phylogeography\">phylogeographic<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Morphology (biology)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morphology_(biology)\">morphological<\/a>\u00a0analyses indicate that the Sri Lankan and Indian elephants are not distinct enough to warrant classification as separate subspecies.<sup id=\"cite_ref-12\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p><p><i><a title=\"Borneo elephant\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Borneo_elephant\">Elephas maximus borneensis<\/a><\/i>\u00a0was proposed by\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Paules Edward Pieris Deraniyagala\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paules_Edward_Pieris_Deraniyagala\">Paules Edward Pieris Deraniyagala<\/a>\u00a0in 1950 who described an elephant in an illustration published in the\u00a0<i><a title=\"National Geographic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Geographic\">National Geographic<\/a><\/i>\u00a0magazine, but not a living elephant in accordance with the rules of the\u00a0<a title=\"International Code of Zoological Nomenclature\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/International_Code_of_Zoological_Nomenclature\">International Code of Zoological Nomenclature<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Deraniyagala_13-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-Cranbrook07_14-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>The Asian elephants living in northern\u00a0<a title=\"Borneo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Borneo\">Borneo<\/a>\u00a0are smaller than all the other subspecies, but with larger ears, a longer tail, and straight tusks. The back is convex or level. The\u00a0<a title=\"Ear\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ear\">ears<\/a>\u00a0are small with dorsal borders folded laterally. It has up to 20 pairs of ribs and 34\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Caudal vertebrae\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Caudal_vertebrae\">caudal vertebrae<\/a>. Over this range of habitat types elephants occur from sea level to over 3,000\u00a0m (9,800\u00a0ft). In the eastern\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Himalaya\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Himalaya\">Himalaya<\/a>\u00a0in northeast India, they regularly move up above 3,000\u00a0m (9,800\u00a0ft) in summer at a few sites.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Choudhury99_34-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>In\u00a0<a title=\"China\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/China\">China<\/a>, the Asian elephant survives only in the prefectures of\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Xishuangbanna\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Xishuangbanna\">Xishuangbanna<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Simao District\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simao_District\">Simao<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"Lincang\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lincang\">Lincang<\/a>\u00a0of southern\u00a0<a title=\"Yunnan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Yunnan\">Yunnan<\/a>. Estimated population is around 300 individual (in 2020).<sup id=\"cite_ref-ECNS_35-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/p><p>In\u00a0<a title=\"Bangladesh\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bangladesh\">Bangladesh<\/a>, some isolated populations survive in the south-east\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Chittagong Hills\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chittagong_Hills\">Chittagong Hills<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-sukumar93_7-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0A herd of 20\u201325 wild elephants was reported as being present in the\u00a0<a title=\"Garo Hills\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Garo_Hills\">Garo Hills<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0<a title=\"Mymensingh\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mymensingh\">Mymensingh<\/a>\u00a0in the late-1990s, being detached from a big herd in the Peack hills of India and prevented from returning by fences put up in the meantime by the Indian border security force.
